The art of Parenting

Since when did parenting become so synonymous with policing?

Why is a parent a synonym for a law enforcer?

Since when were mothers and fathers expected to act as gods over their children rather than friends?

Its mere common sense, in my experience, that the best of parents produce well-rounded children, and future adults.

The sculpting, molding, shaping and guiding performed by parent to offspring matters more than genes.

It is what makes the next generation so unique.

A mother that holds her daughters hand, rather than scold and punishes, can gain the security and respect from her child. One can not teach a lesson to someone who doesn't want to learn from the teacher.

A father who inspires and speaks with wisdom motivates his own more than the man who yells, ignores and enforces pointless rules.

Learning occurs through experience, through first-hand mistakes, and through the quest for knowledge.

A child can not learn in an environment where they must lie to feel like the best forms of themselves.

One can not be inspired in a world where they have nothing to aspire to.

The parent who teaches right from wrong, who takes a step back, who has high expectations and holds their children accountable, who trusts their children and lets them know they do, are the ones who get through.

They are the true teachers.

The parents who enforce strict rules, who lack the intellectual and emotional connection with their child, who never established a meaningful relationship, who don’t even know their own offspring, are the ones who have failed.

While these failures may provide, may love, and may even produce successful humans- they have failed to teach their child the lesson that I was so grateful to learn.

I know what it takes to be a parent, to be a friend, to be a mother.

I understand compassion and how it changes people.

I know sacrifice and the value it has.

I can see pain and recognize a silent cry for help.

I know support, i know love, i know knowledge, inspiration.

My parents were never police officers.

My parents were comedians, body guards, doctors, entertainers, problem solvers, cheerleaders tutors, therapists, and the best of friends.

More parents must learn, to be more like my parents.
