The Awakening

So I’m not sleeping

In order to correct my sleep schedule

It’s ridiculous because

I wake up at 3 in the afternoon

And though I have no job

And though my career is now in house-tending

3 in the afternoon is unacceptable

So I figure that if I stay up all night and all day

I’ll be able to fall asleep at a normal time

Give or take 9 or 10

And I won’t be caught in this endless cycle

And I realize that

There’s never a more calm time in the world

Than at sunrise, or the minutes before

That, though any other time of day might be considered “boring,”

There’s something about sunrise that makes me content

Like, it’s a brand new day…

The dew drops are fresh on the blades of grass

Like a can of soda that’s just come out of a cooler.

Like if I took a walk,

There wouldn’t be one car out.
Because it’s crazy to be up at this hour.
Because society deems that this is the hour where human beings

Are ordained to sleep.

Where are the night people?

Everyone at once is resting in their respective beds but

Who’s responsible for tending to the world?

This is for the firemen, the paramedics, the police officers, the all night late night rave night party animals

This is for staying up
Because the most beautiful time of day is the time of day most often ignored

Like a secluded island off in the Mediterranean

5 am is my tropical paradise.

The darkness scoped out across the early sky as if Ra were saying

“Hey man,

Even gods need a break.”

Even a portion of the world would be turned to darkness like a radio dial

Switching from station to station

And the East Coast time zone is tuned to nothing but static.

So you turn your radio dial until you find something to your liking

Or maybe you just bask in the static?

Like “Hey man,

Even I need a break.”

This is for the politicians, the partitions, the apartheid in modern society,

This is for the sleepers, the chronic reality goers,

This is for the people who rest in their beds

So the remainder of the world

So the remainder of the world is mine.
