Ballad of the Shadows

I can see the shadows dance.

Here they drift and they sway

With each step that they take

Laughing and leaping away.

I can see the shadows dance.

They come out at night

To dart by my sides

Stretching around to all different height

I can see the shadows dance.

Here at present they lie

Complacent and dormant

They sleep in the bushes but they do not die

I can see the shadows dance.

But they aren’t pleasant and pretty

They’re dark and misshapen

Like abandoned old cities

I can see the shadows dance.

And they climb up my walls

They rest in the corners

In the dark bathroom stalls

I can see the shadows dance.

But they’re no longer nice

They’re demons and ghouls

And I’m a meal to suffice

I can see the shadows dance.

As I cower and hide

I pray that these shades

Will soon leave my side

I can see the shadows dance.

They’re dark and they’re hungry

And here I shake and scream

Like a wasted old junkie

I can see the shadows dance.

And they’ve come to take me away

They’re grabbing and clawing

But for what I can’t say

I can see the shadows dance.

For they’ve taken my soul

And all that’s left is a body

In a shallow, shaded hole.
