Best Years of Your Life

Sat, 07/18/2015 - 17:08 -- LostatC

"Prepare yourself," they tell you as you walk blindly into the dark,

"These will be the greatest years of your life."

The memories, the friends, all it takes is a single step forward into your future...

A large, gloomy building appears in front of you,

You walk through the massive doors, eyes widening in wonder and fear.

All around you strange voices and unknown silhouettes are moving.

You can feel them staring,

Judgmental eyes that glow amongst unfamiliar faces.

Some of these strangers appear taller than you as you scurry past,

Hoping to find the path of which you are meant to take.

It feels like ages before you finally begin exploring down a passageway nervously,

Yet the further you move, the easier your feet tend to glide over the tiled floor.

Every now and then a voice of familiarity rings out,

A friendly smile from someone you once socialized with finds their way into your view.

And you feel rather sorry that you fell out of touch and no longer know each other as well as you used to,

But you don't dwell on it too much, for they have passed and you must keep moving forward.

Walking past doorways and numerous passages adjacent to the one you're currently on,

Once dark and mysterious now illuminated brightly;

It feels as though you're at the heart of a maze,

Yet you don't feel lost.

Quite frankly, the emotion is rather opposite.

With laughter all around, you feel as though you finally have your bearings

And escaping from this prison is as easy as a bird taking flight.

Oh dear, what is this?

Your feet begin to drag with the weight acquired over the past 4 years.

You want to give up,

You want to give in to your tiredness,

But you know victory is within the mile.

Just ahead of you a bright light begins to burn,

The end of the tunnel is there, the escape has arrived, freedom has returned.

Before you know it you're stepping back out into broad day light once more.

You turn and look at the building that now appears small and welcoming,

One last fleeting glance inside is met with wide eyes.

You laugh a little as you realize they look just as lost as you did those many years ago.

Just before the door closes you manage to pass on a final word of advice,

"Prepare yourselves, these will be the best years of your life."
