Blessings of a Fire

A family in my neighborhood...

the family situation wasn't good.

Parents got divorced,

Mother and kids moved out by force.

Moved across town,

Oldest brother always spotted with a frown.

One day we picked up the phone,

The mother was alone.

Old neighbors; always someone to rely on,

We were in the car and gone.

to the new house drove,

and arrived to hear talk of a "left on stove"

The new house had caught fire,

From this loss, we had something to acquire.

Out from the ashes walked the fire chief,

something in his hand we couldn't believe.

A soggy black tail hung down,

and I closed my eyes without a sound.

Me being an animal lover,

didn't want to be around the corpse and hover.

I felt a tear in my eye..

Only to hear he was still alive.

The little one once thought to be dead,

wriggled and lifted his head.

His eyes met with mine,

and everything seemed to fall in line.

The boys had plenty of pets of their own,

so we gave this miracle kitten a home.

We nurtured the skinny cat,

and two years later he is skinny and fat.
