The Breath of Embers

Location

When the time has come for me to die,

And I'm ready, and I'm willing, it's just so hard not to cry,

No I won't, or I can't, say goodbye.

Though it's lonely, the darkness pulls me.

Go ahead, it's okay to smile.

Only memories with good endings are the ones that last a while.

I know death to you looks bleak and tastes so vile.

Bet there's a sequel, and I bet it's peaceful.

Don't look back as you exit the room,

Just remember each December it'll be your turn soon.

It'll hit you as you're walking away

That the last breath before death is the price we pay

For each breath during life that we take.

Tell the children that I'm really just asleep

As the elders tell the secrets that they promised that they'd keep,

And this violence you call silence cuts so deep.

Are you all praying? What's that you're saying?

Don't look back as you exit the room.

Just remember with these embers it'll be your turn soon.

It'll hit you as you're lying awake

That the last breath before death is the price we pay

For each breath during life that we take.

Someone once said we die alone.

Now I believe it.

Now I can see it.

And as I drift towards the unknown,

I feel the fear now

As I leave the here and now
