Broken Stage

Pre-rehearsed lines,

Memorized gestures,

It all looks perfect,

The cheery optimist and cheerleader of friendship,

But really she’s just staggering in step to a badly tuned song,

Doesn’t wear makeup,

Since she’s the tomboy and casual girl,

Nothing bothers her,

Although the way she laughs and shyly smiles,

Is the black eye liner and conditioning she puts on,

Pull back the curtain,

What do you see?

A reflection of what she could be,

Dancing in the moonlight,

Singing to the stars,

Watching the twisting travelers of the night,

Silence,

It’s her comforting friend,

Betrayed once then twice,

The third time never again,

She’s distance and almost alien,

Never really connecting with others,

Since she’s too busy writing and reading,

Thinking up worlds that people don’t understand,

In a world of facts and figures,

She’s the one,

Who watches people from afar,

Never taking part of the script,

Backstage girl,

Helping others shine,

While she hides in the back of the line,

But pull back the curtain,

And what do you see?

Visions of who she could be,

Hidden within her is dying will,

To fight and never flee,

A knight in shining armor,

Honestly she’s tired of the lies,

Telling people she’s alright,

There’s nothing wrong in this prefect picture,

Since she’s the one who holds them up,

So she lies about how she really is,

Emotionally and physically,

Knowing a single misstep will reveal her web of lies,

But she’ll keep fighting and hiding,

Living and hoping,

Because she believes there’s music in all of us,

It’s not like the curtain isn’t a part of who she is,

There’s just something more important,

That she isn’t showing,

Because no one realizes there’s more to a person,

Than what they reveal for the world to know,

So pull back the curtain,

And what do you see?

A girl who believes in others,

Supporter and fighter,

Defender and lover,

Protector and wisher,

Wishing for a better world,

And hoping to one day finds the courage,

To pull back the curtains,

And shine.
