Cabin 4083-A Semester At Sea
The click of my key-card
unlocking my heavy, heavy cabin door,
and the sound of the hand sanitizer dispenser
three times a day,
breakfast, lunch, dinner.
The mysterious rattley hiss coming from somewhere above my cabin,
that I could never figure out.
The soothing sound of Professor Serio reciting Wallace Steven's poetry
while I watch the waves break against the MV Explorer.
The silence of the dining hall during school time and
the clammer during dinner.
My squeal of delight at the first glimpse of our first stop, Japan,
my homesick sob after India, halfway through the voyage.
Now that I'm home, these sounds,
the sounds of my great adventure,
can only make me
smile.
