Cancer

I remember when you told me

You sat me down

When you said those words,

I felt as if about to drown.

¨Your aunt has cancer¨

You said, expression grim.

I was filled with horror,

And the room became dim.

It was breast cancer, but

They caught it early on you said.

You were optimistic

I could barely raise my head.

And then there was chemo

And that beautifully strong woman lost her hair.

Then came radiation, and her immune system

Was weak so when we saw her next, it was hard not to stare.

She was very thin, and wearing a wig

But she was optimistic

And she got better, look at her now

She's always been more than just a statistic.
