Children,
Quiet nights, chubby toes, imaginary friends in class.
Water balloons, ice cream trucks, green blades of grass.
Children,
Mistakes made, processing death, moving away with dad.
Screaming from the other room, being ignored, “sweetie, don’t be so sad.”
Children,
Savaging for food, plastic bottle shoes, scared to fall asleep.
Dressed up, burned out eyes, making money for another man’s dream.
Children,
Grow up for your brother, no food for dinner, live in a concrete box.
Sell off your body, play with garbage, cross that line and get shot.
Children,
Finest of things, toy pets to dress, princess, you’ll have anything you want.
Stuck up and stubborn, windows over the city, don’t work ‘cause daddy is on top.

Children,
Share dreams and hope.
Because you never know where you could have been.
