Childhood Influences
The very first time, I wanted to rhyme
Was when I first read Shel Silverstein
He told me where the sidewalk ends
But little did we know that’s where it began
Runny Babbit and the Giving Tree
Was really what first intrigued me
His poems taught me a moral code
That wasn’t something you could buy or hold
Later in life, what it did for me
It helped me cope with adversity
When I would get upset or mad
I’d reach for my pen and my writing pad
Writing stanzas and rhyming all about my day
Helped me get across what I had to say
From expressing myself to making me laugh
Poetry helps me find the right path.
