The Color Inside
Location
All my life a sea of white
At school and on teams
They ask so many questions
" Why is your hair like that?"
" Let me touch it!"
Expressing so many comments and opinions
Through their own ignorance
" Oh, I forgot you were here", they say
" What do you say when I'm not around?", I think to myself
" Hey Sara, how are you today?", I ask
" N**** please" she replied
Therefore, I suppress my heritage
To fit in
To have friends
To be able to "relate"
Yet, I am still exposed because of the color of my skin
"You are the whitest black girl I have ever seen"
I hear it almost every day
Is this what my ancestors wanted?
Is this what they fought for?
Is this what they died for?
No.
