The Country In Which I Believe

Tue, 05/09/2017 - 21:01 -- patmari

From gentle hills to savanna-like plains,

From carved out crevasses to extending mountain ranges,

From ageless forest to expanding ocean blues,

This is my country, but only from one side.

The land of the free,

The land of opportunity,

Yet this is not what I can see.

I see my people, my brethren rejecting thee.

They chose to be fearful of you.

Your new words, ideals, and culture,

All push them away.

They chose to reject those different from them,

Those that may oppose or change what they believe.

How can this place allow us to have independence?

The land of the free,

The land of opportunity,

Yet this is not what I can hear.

I hear my people, my brethren ignoring thee.

The media has slandered you,

They claim that your experts are spreading lies.

When it’s them with their alternative facts.

They want to cause chaos and reign with fear,

But I know that you’ll try your hardest to warn us

Of the state of our world and attempt to bring us back to reality.

The land of the free,

The land of opportunity,

Yet this is not what I can feel.

I feel my people, my brethren damning thee.

Our system once again fails you,

A program that denies you aid,

For an issue you had no possible chance to avoid.

This slow disease will end you,

Without proper aid,

But who can help you when they refuse to pay?

The land of the free,

The land of opportunity,

Yet this is not what I can believe.

I believe in my people, Imagining that you can be.

There are others out there who hear our cry.

They too have been lashed by blind eyes.

Our voices will be heard and we won’t be denied.

This place is inhabited by us as well,

And we have a say in what should be done,

And we have the right to not live in fright.
