Dance Even Though Someone Is Watching

Prom is a time for everyone to have fun

Not for people to cut and run

It’s a time for people to get down and dance

Not feel embarrassed and wet their pants

I remember for my prom I went stag.

Feeling like I had this thing in the bag.

But one thing that unnerved me a lot

Was dancing, suddenly I didn’t feel so hot

As a kid I was bullied to no end

For stupid things, it was like a trend

We grew up a bit in high school

But I was still hesitant to dance, I thought I’d play it cool

Prom started, but nobody got down

Not seeing people party made me frown

Only one or two people were out on the dance floor

But other than that, it was a total bore.

Suddenly a good song played on the loudspeaker

I thought maybe I should go out and dance, the evening can’t get bleaker

So with a deep breath I got up from my seat

And I turned to the DJ saying, “Dude, drop the beat!”

I danced, I shuffled, and bounced like crazy

I can’t remember anything else I did. The moment is kind of hazy.

Did I dance like a pro? The answer is no

I was certain I’d be ridiculed for lack of rhythm and flow

But to my surprise, everyone joined me

I inspired everyone to dance and sing with glee

I conquered my fear of dancing in front of everyone

If it weren’t for me, then nobody would have an ounce of fun.

That night I learned everyone really had grown up

Not making fun of me and supporting me, yup!

I also learned that I inspired people

To dance and soar like an eagle

That was easily the best night of my life

I had no more worries, no more strife

If I can go back and relive that night I would

But it still lives on in my memories, that was good.

Kevin Bourne

My name is Kevin Bourne, and I am a student at SUNY Oneonta trying to earn his bachelor's in Media Studies. Like this poem says, I was bullied a lot in school so naturally I was hesitant to get out and dance at prom because I can't dance to save my life and I knew I'd be ridiculed. To my surprise though, when nobody would dance, I decided to bite the bullet and have a good time. Next thing I know, everyone is dancing with me. I inspired everyone to have a good time by manning up and face my fears of being made fun of. In short, I hope you pick me for the scholarship and I hope you enjoy this poem.
