Dear Uncle Sam,
I never noticed how much I take advantage of this country.
I got clothes on my back and food on the table so I don't go hungry.
The color of my skin does not limit me from getting an education,
But not many people can be in this situation.
Both of my parents are alive with worry.
Wondering why I wanna leave in such a hurry.
I'm searching for the answers that still haven't been found.
Like why was a black boy's body still laid out on the ground
Shot in the back when he was home bound.
Gunshots heard before he turned around.
They identified the boy as young Michael Brown.
I questioned Trayvon's death when I was only fourteen.
But more black bodies kept dropping, catching steam.
First Trayvon, then Eric, then Freddie.
You might lose count since his violence has been steady.
Racial tension rose when Donald became chief,
Deporting your citizens based on their own beliefs.
Before the election, which was outside the norm
You could tell that it was only calm before the storm.
Tell me why that at even eighteen years of age,
Even I know not to give a white supremacist the stage.
Your vision for this country wanted everyone to help.
Now we're just paying the dues that were dealt.
On the brink of world war, I'm worried for my life.
You could cut our country's tensions with the dullest knife.
I'm stuck at a fork in the road about how this came to be,
But I guess my only trust is in the phrase "O SAY CAN YOU SEE"

This poem is about:
Me
My country
Our world
