Early To Bed, Never To Rise
I woke up late today.
My selfish, shallow sin
Convinced me to hide beneath the covers
And give up before I'd begun.
I woke up late today.
When the world was dark and empty
And the light of the dawn and all things good
Was far beyond my reaching.
I woke up late today.
All the life that I could find
Was footprints, scents of all I knew
That had left me all behind.
I woke up late today.
The children I should have known
Had let me eat their dust, it seems
While not one of them has grown.
I woke up late today
And all the world's lost sheep
Had mown it down to brown and gray
So I just went back to sleep.
