The Echo of Love

I am the echo of three words sung

Proclaiming that life has begun

An echo that was meant to create a wave,

Asking about the path I would pave

Before I realized what I was,

I was told.

A girl who smiled at the sky

Never believing in “goodbye”

A whisper escaped my memory

Getting lost in reverie

Of what could have been

If her father would have been

If given the time to understand

what had happened

Never knowing the meaning of abandoned

Before I understood what I was,

I was told.

A girl who grew up to believe “love” was only a four letter word

Used at the end of a note to wish someone well

I accepted love to be what was right in front of me

An absence represented by the tall oak tree

I grew with each leaf

Understanding that love begins in the midst of grief

Love for the self

Is what transformed

A young girl who was an echo sung

Of three words telling her that life had once again begun
