Ever Beating

That magnificent thing that beats in my chest,
Thumping along it seems to be blessed
With mechanisms that never rest;
No matter how many heart breaks
How many mistakes
It’s open and waiting.

Lub dub, lub dub

Locked behind bone, you cannot reach.
There are a few things it could teach;
Teach you to translate what you feel into speech,
Teach you to be open and on guard,
Teach you to mend what has been marred,
Teach you to go on.

Lub dub, lub dub

It hasn’t beat long but it knows a great deal.
It knows what secrets to reveal,
What truths to conceal.
It knows that you feel like you are caught in a trap,
Stretched thin by expectations and ready to snap.
Who were you before you cared?

Lub dub, lub dub

What’s that?
That which makes me human you want to subtract,
That which makes me abstract?
Do you know what they call this work of art?
It’s my heart.
Tell me, what happened to yours?

Lub dub, lub dub
