Everyone I Care About

I often greet the day with a scowl

It's not as if I would smile after 4 hours of sleep,

knowing that still,

my work isn't finished.

I've gotta get up

To get an education and to do well in school

To pursue my strange goal of becoming a politician.

I often look at my future with uncertainty.

But who doesn't?

Is my goal even attainable?

Am I doing it for the right reasons?

I wake up every morning simply because of passion

Passion which has stemmed from watching my immigrant parents toil

Just to give my younger sisters and I an amazing life.

From watching the social injustices in the world around me.

The repeal of civil rights.

From systems that are broken.

From people who have been affected.

From knowing every day, soldiers die for our freedom.

From knowing that life isn't extremely easy for anybody.

I don't always greet the day with a scowl,

sometimes it's a smile.

Because

In whatever way I can, I want to make this world a better place.

For you, for my community, for my country, for our world.

AKA everyone I care about.

This poem is about:
Me
My family
My community
My country
Our world
