When I take a picture

I smile and stare at my relfection.

My mind wonders if they will like it

if they will see me the way  I see me.

Add a filter to hide imperfections

maybe make it black and white

and change the lighting.

Turn up the brightness,

turn down the contast.

Add some highlights,

add some shadows.

And for what?

We hide behind the camera,

only hopeful that someone

will see our beauty

the way we see it.

But will they ever see us behind a filter?
This poem is about:
Me
My family
My community
My country
Our world
