Growing Pains

You ask: If you could change one thing,

What would it be?

I think: Racism,

No; too specific.

Discrimination.

No, that's not enough; broader!

Suffering!

But-- wait--

What about, "no pain, no gain"?

There is no growth without trial.

Perfection is stagnation.

So what do I change?

If it's not the wrong and heartache and agony in this world,

What should I change?

Perhaps--

It's not the world I should change.

It's me.

What about me?

Make me willing to bear the pain.

Make me willing to suffer whatever it takes to reach my goals.

But most of all, make in me a clean heart, O God,

So I may follow you no matter what the world throws my way.
