Growing Pains

When I was young

The growing pains

Were in my legs and feet

I’d cry to mom

I’d yell for dad

Can you stop the aching please?

My mother said

With mock concern

Dear, it’s just growing pains

You’re getting taller

Stronger, older

The pain will go away

Now five foot five

I’m an adult

My legs no longer hurt

But something else

That’s caused me pain

Sends teardrops on my shirt

Emotional

And mental health

Are hard to medicate

I cry for my mom

I yell for dad

To take the pain away

These growing pains

Are more intense

I don’t know if they’ll end

I know to grow

I have to hurt

But growing pains will mend
