I will never fall in love for fear of a constantly harrowed heart

You get the insane idea that you found the one
On the phone for hours on end, sharing every intimate detail
Holding hands for all the world to see
Moving entirely too fast
In less than a month you're uttering the words, "I love you."
Thinking that this is the most incredible, enormous, immense, ferocious love there is
And without it you'll die

Giving every part of yourself, letting him inside
Whispering promises of tomorrow
Only to find out they meant nothing
You meant nothing
All because you were moving way too fast

Moving too fast your heart explodes
You're dead inside
The word, love, that was once sweet and melodic is now a brilliant music stilled

This happens to the best of us
You go from having an open heart to having no heart at all
Eventually thinking your heart is ready to love again
Only to have your heart harrowed again and again
Until you brick up your heart, it's so impregnable, cold and dark
You can't even recognize it
Seeing it happen time and time again to everyone you care about

I will never fall in love for fear of a constantly harrowed heart
