Heart in the Sky

Location

dark, darkened mystery
the night makes no sound
(shhh)
that's just the scurrying of creatures
close to the ground
but the stars
they are hushed

no, no, no
don't speak
all these human hopes and dreams are
making me weary

i'm starting to feel like the air
i have no rhyme, no reason
i just float anywhere
to make more room for myself
i have no notion of myself
but i think i can see myself somewhere far out in the distance
oh, now i'm feeling so damned distanced
my eyes are shut and
my being is drifting
far from this time and place

splash water on my face
sit me up and
some persistant goddamned part of my brain
regroups and is disillusioned
masks traces of confusion
aligns my brain-tongue fusion
with my observable surroundings

and my surroundings bound me
confound me
elude me, and yet
somehow seem to define me
by a home, a job, a family
but i'm not feeling like it's part of me

i'm drifting away
back into the vastness of the sky
until i feel that gentle pull
back into my lungs
to and from
while the heart-beat keeps time

--^--^--^

so make room for this heart heading
straight for the sky
no questions, no reasons why
but the moon reflects the sunlight
like my mind reflects the
beat beat-ba-beat beat
pounding in my ribcage
but there ain't no way i'm just
the blood in my veins
the smile on my face
this rubbery skin covering this
frail skeleton that is

man - who turned down the heat?
my body shivering, shaking with the
rhythm of the wind
but there ain't no way i'm down
deep in this skin - but then
who am i?

am i a ghost, tied to this flesh?
yellin' screamin' like
"yo, this ain't me
i am not the contents of this wardrobe
this fashionable social show that is
the intent of my
ego"

you want to know who I am?
look at the spaces between the stars then
look at the blackness in the people's eyes

you want to know who I am?
check with the beat beat-ba-beat beat of
your own heart then.
