Hymn of a Raven

Entering the sanctuary,

My eyes set on a soft and gentle,

Most misunderstood creature.

I walk to your dome top cage you've been trapped in.

And it is here, I see you sing your song.

And an alluring story it holds.

A joyous tune of deception to an untrained ear.

The ode you chirp, whistle, twitter about,

I hear you off key.

Not quite on the correct pitch,

Like, the sound of a rusted flute.

As if you're trying for a range that's just not you.

A tragedy in your tale.

There's a hidden rasp in your voice.

That not many can detect,

And that others may not even be able to hear.

But I,

I understand your call.

And you can not fool me, bird!

And I may even put my finger in that cage,

Not to rattle you up,

But to better understand you.

Show you someone is listening.

You aren't the stereotypical bird, no.

A wise one you really are.

Intelligent and most beautiful raven you are too.

And when I see you in flight.

There is something missing.

Your wing span is different,

A few centimeters off,

And you glide at an angel that would fool others,

But, oh no, not I.

You will never fool me, bird!

I know you too well now.

Examine you from afar.

Examined you through experience,

Showing me different ways to fly.

That the black feathers you have don't show sorrow.

That you posses courage.

That you're fear-less.

And that the eloquence in your song boast a comfort.

A comfort unknown to a simple human.

The ability to find light within a dark time.

That is you bird.

I am no ornithologist.

But, damn do I understand your song more and more

As the music flows through me.

The introspective vocals that you need renewed.

To tear down those walls that bind you and rebuild a new perspective.

A shell no longer, but a person not whole, yet.

I need for you to sing again.

Sing a different tune.

A melody that regrows the soul.

A soul, that has been damaged.

A soul, I know still exists and is true.

Notes that show your honest character.

The notes I once fell for.

That nothing can bring you down.

Not even the very cage that entraps your troubled mind.

Unless you just enjoy that cage

And I was just the jester worm.

But, I know that's not true.

And ease is all I want for you.

And at the door I look,

For the locks Ive demolished like a ravenous beast.

I've demanded your cage open,

And soaring through the skies I wish for you.

But it is you who has to fly out.

To embark on the flight.

To redefine that voice.

To aviate, free and whole again.

To come back to me,

And sing once more.
