I Keep Them Locked Away

I could not escape the clothes I
Wore: the parts that rode too high to keep
The belt that dug so deep, or the
God-awful ribbon tie that I hated the most.

Nor would they have let me be  important
If I had even tried to loosen those things
Of mockery I endured when locked
Away.

Why would I join a club for
Acting and playing games when
Certainly it would add to the torment I
Already endured and I do not know
The rules of the game. Certainly not.

But being another person, wearing what
Different skin they do, it is a gift I
Receive from others and freely choose - want -
To give away to end the torment for
Myself.
