I Talked to God On The Bus Once

I don't have anything to inspire me, except the feelings I get when I watch you concentrate
on things such as buying a train ticket.
I'm not inspired by the way flowers grow into something beautiful, but I am inspired
by the way you wrap your fingers around mine whenever the feeling is
right.
The trees outside are swaying, and I should be inspired to write about how gentle
they look dancing along the thunder and rain, but instead I'm thinking of the way you
laugh at certain things--like getting locked into places we thought were stores.
The cracks in the sidewalks should inspire me to write about the way a skateboarder
could easily fall, but I think about the cracked wrinkles that form perfectly around
your eyes when you smile.
The thing is, there are a lot of things that should inspire me to write a poem as
great as Edgar Allan Poe, but I always get stuck writing about the six different
feelings that wake me up around midnight.
Swings often signify childhood, but I write about walking by all the different city parks
with you.
The thing about writing is that poems and letters and novels are often based
on someone, or on feelings.
And the thing about feelings, is that they
always change.
