I WRITE POEMS // MATCHMAKER

Location

I write poems for my demographic
The under-18’s
Old enough to hear but too young to be heard
So we write-
Sometimes, I stab the page so hard
That I can hear my pen sing the gospel.
It’s a shame that no one takes the time to listen to the gospel anymore.

I write poems in August
Because sometimes August feels like July
My mother has never been the same since her mother died five July’s ago
So I write for her-
Some wounds are too strong for poetry to heal
But my poems aren’t meant to heal
I write to try and make her July’s feel like my August’s.

I write poems for Ferguson
A community dashed by a political attempt to create a metaphor
Everything makes sense when it’s neatly-packed into some tragic metaphor
So I write for those forgotten-
Those who know that it doesn’t make sense to broadcast the worst of it
But in the spirit of Rodney and Eric and Trayvon and Michael
They let the Radio City of their hearts orchestrate a tune loud enough for all to hear.

I write poems for myself.
There are always a million different poems dancing in my head waiting to meet their page
And I like playing matchmaker.
