If I Let My Body Run Away

Wed, 05/23/2018 - 12:37 -- T.Cohen

I think I could keep running
and run right out of my own skin
I'd run in circles before I met you
and by then you'd barely recognize me.
Soon I could leave behind these excesses
as I ran by and through these dark recesses
and my mind would race against time
and my heart would pound like my feet
against the ground next to you --
out of breath, or nearly so
burning through the soles of my feet
and the flesh around my frame
so that you could finally see what you're running with --
I think I could keep running
and run right out of my own skin
and the ground would burn with
the pieces of me left behind
And the wind would break my bonds
and I know you'd smile that sad smile
and I think I could keep running out of breath
until the air is gone and so am I.
