Independent

They call me Melody

Melody like a song

I stand alone as an independent individual

I stand out in the crowd of my school

I don’t blend in perfectly

And I choose to not blend in

I’ve been raised and taught to be my own leader

I’ve been raised and taught to not fail often

My family is alone in the small community

We’re the odd ones

Different skin tone and bilingual

Coming from a big family of eleven total

I’ve learned well to be patient with others

I’ve learned well that others need their space

I’ve learned well that life isn’t given easily

I’ve learned well that I need to break hearts to be able

To get to the other side where my future awaits me

I am the different individual one in my family

I chose to leave instead of stay nearby

I chose to not depend on my parents to help me

Pay for my future

I chose to face reality and accept the truth that reality

Has to offer me now and in the near future

Life is hard to please with the worries and doubts blocking my view

I take the opportunities that are offered to me to help guide me along my way

They call me Melody

Melody like a song

I stand alone as an independent individual
