Just because I am gay

Just because I am gayDon’t think I like you, I like hot guysDon’t think I can’t judge women, I am not blindDon’t think I am weak, I am stronger than youJust because I am gayIt doesn’t mean I am not supported, I receive even more support than youIt doesn’t mean I can’t “hang with the guys”, I can control myselfIt doesn’t mean I can’t “be a man”, I can be who I wantJust because I am gayDon't think you can get away with harming me or those I hold dear, you won'tDon't think you can electrocute my life out of me, nothing can stop me from being meDon't think your comments are any less offensive, words hurtJust because I am gayIt doesn't mean I am any different than you, we are all homosapiensIt doesn't mean I won't get offended when you use slurs targeting me, words hurtIt doesn't mean you are any better than I am, we all are equalJust because I am gayDon’t think I won’t get married, I will get marriedDon’t think that I think any less of you, I am not biasedJust because I am gay- don’t think any less of me

Hate Crimes Need to Stop

Do people ever have that moment when they imagine themselves laying down on the

floor, dead, eyelids still open from the fresh glimpses of innocence they had, but lost in the blink of an eye? Or crashed into the car next to them because they didn’t see that elderly woman crossing the street, swerving so that they could avoid her? Well, many people fear for their lives everyday, just in a different way. The Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender community have to fear hate crimes in their daily lives, hate crimes that could possibly affect them and those around them. According to the FBI, the LGBT community has the second highest hate crime rate, an astounding 18.6% of all hates crimes, in the United States. Hate crimes are not just happening in the U.S. either. In the United Kingdom, hate crimes of all sorts are happening: hate crimes with injury, without injury, public order offences, criminal damage, and arson just to name a few(President 1). LGBT people all around the world fear for their lives, and those of which they associate with. Some people in this world might attack the LGBT community for whatever reasons of their own, but this does not stop the fact that killing a human being is just point blank wrong. These hate crimes, targeting the LGBT community, are rising. We can use a couple solutions to help these hate crimes towards the LGBT community to stop. These hate crimes need to stop for many reasons.

A person of the opposition might validate their crimes by saying the idea of homosexuality is unethical, unethical in a sense that homosexuality, as a pneuma, is a thing against the very laws of nature that everyone abides by. Furthermore the person is likely to refer to the Holy Bible as a logical resource to support their point; contradictingly enough, this argument is not supported in valid detail. For instance, the King James Version of the Holy Bible states verses such as “[Leviticus 18:22] Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination.”(p. 66), “[Deuteronomy 23:17] There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel”(p. 116), and “[Romans 1:27]  And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet”(p. 647) that make it seem as though homosexuality is nothing but an “abomination” in the eyes of God. Whereas the KJB also states “[Romans 10:4] For Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth”(p. 651), and “[Hebrews 8:13] In that he saith, A new [covenant,] he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old [is] ready to vanish away”(p. 695). In a composition of these two verses, the KJB states that the Old Testament is ready to be renewed, updated, or forgotten entirely, also stating that Christ makes the law and that people heed to his laws should they follow the Christian faith. Since Jesus claims that the Old Testament be “ready to vanish away” and his word, stated by the Romans, is law, then it is questioned whether or not people are actually following God’s ruling. That is to say, people who claim to be of the Christian faith, but have not been following this law, given to them by Christ, can be rightfully accused of committing a sin. Therefore Christians must come to the realization that, as Jesus has said, they must “decay the Old Testament” completely before being able to be accepted as a true Christian. It is Christ’s word against that of the co-workers, family, and friends that people surround themselves with, and it is their choice in who to follow. In this case, there is just a matter of people letting go of the past, and welcoming the future with, wide, open arms, at least, that is what God wanted.

Another reason that people who oppose the idea of homosexuality and might commit hate crimes in an action to force their thoughts upon others is because they think that homosexuals, as a whole, cannot benefit the environment in a positive way. Joel L. Watts, a Christian blogger, used some examples of reasons why some people believe that homosexuality is something that leeches society, not giving back in any way, shape, or form. For example, Watts states, “Homosexuality does not offer the stability of a traditional family”(par. 9). His statement is incorrect in a number of ways. Firstly, most people define  a “traditional family” as a single household consisting each of a mother-like and a father-like parent and [a] child[ren]. Since homosexuality does not assume the entirety of the statement, people assume that a household with homosexual parents cannot function similarly to that of a heterosexual parents’ household. Leading to hate crimes against the families of homosexuals, all because some people do not think that homosexuals will make adequate parents. Secondly, further in the article, Watts states “Children need a real male Father and a female Mother for proper and healthy development”(par. 10). This statement is contradicted daily by the thriving lives of children in the household of a single parent of any sexuality or gender. Much tribulation is often found as a single parent struggles to raise their child[ren] up decently, and properly. When humans are faced with hardships, they tend to figure out a way around the situation to make the situation better. Children are likely to do the same. With the prospect of having a single parent, people need to judge the outcome of “good parenting” by the “quality over quantity” ratio. It is not how much parenting you give a child that makes them succeed, it is how good that parenting is. Therefore this statement is further proven incorrect. Another quote also states, “Homosexuality is anti-procreation”(par. 6). This statement, in a sense, is only half correct. Although homosexuality does not promote procreation, it is still a possibility for same-sex couples to procreate. Using In Vitro Fertilization, “a complex series of procedures used to treat fertility or genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child”(Mayo Clinic Staff), LGBT parents can be assisted in the act of procreation. Procreation through Vitro Fertilization is oftenly used with a homosexual couple and is possible if the couple can afford it. Hereby, again, proving another excuse people make for hating people of the homosexual sexual orientation invalid. Watts, has since changed his views commenting, “…I state repeatedly that this is no longer my view of homosexuality. If nothing else, this… should serve as a reminder of the God-awful ways people view LGBT people, not as persons, but as inhuman, almost criminal, non-person animals. Such a rejection of the personhood of the LGBT individual is not a mark against them, but against those who either held or hold these views…”(par. 1). He has come to a realization that homosexuality is not harmful to society in any way. Everyone for whom should find themselves conflicted with the idea of homosexuality need to come to this same realization; If homosexuals do not harm others, why do others harm homosexuals?

Overall, hate crimes against the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgendered community need to stop. Hate crimes all around us prove to the world that people have not fully accepted homosexuality as a prosaic commodity in their everyday lives yet. People, sadly, are not clay. They cannot be born to be whatever other people want them to be, do whatever other people want them to do, or change to be whatever anybody wants them to be. People can only change themselves and hope that their actions change the actions of others; but no one can have change without first having a resolution of the problem. The reasons listed above are all excuses for hating the LGBT community, excuses proved wrong by facts and logic. This article has proved to normal, everyday people that people of the homosexual sexual orientation are exactly the same. The LGBT community raises children with as much care and nurturing as any other family. Homosexual people give back to the community by procreating and having jobs like any other person would. Homosexuals are not hated by God, so why should they be hated by any other person?
