“The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.”--Vince Lombardi
Coming from Milwaukee to the suburbs
I struggled to cover the numbers
Of the income of my father and mother
Because it was under that of the others
No one knew, no one wondered
Why I never had the latest brands
Why I enjoyed the lunch everyone thought was bland
Why I never back talked the teachers’ commands
And so they misunderstand
They think I’m poor, they think I’m a bore
They dip their buckets into pity and pour me more
They think they know me, they act like they adore me
But in reality, they ignore me
Even my teachers don’t see a future for me
Just because I’m from the hood
They think I could not achieve what I have already withstood?
Man, screw it! I got into Stanford!
I got a three point eight O
I got all the A’s I said I would
Because I worked with what I had
No money but I still have my head
No calculator but I still did the math
No guide but I’ll still walk my own path
Because I was blessed with this knowledge
To overcome the challenge and to stay modest
To keep moving forward regardless
With this knowledge, my dreams are accomplished
With this knowledge, their judgments are demolished
With this knowledge, I am flawless.
