Lifelines

If I had to talk about myself,

I would not know where to start,

Because my life is like a winding road;

Short, but full of unexpected twists.

I was born as if I were a princess;

The oldest of three and always getting my way,

I was a wild child

With dreams that I could fly.

But those dreams were cut short

Because of harsh reality;

Choices determine ones future

And mine were chosen by one man’s mistakes.

My life was hit with a storm,

And I was a ship crashing through the waves;

Being tossed around in life’s ocean

Wishing for it all to end.

When it ended I was spilt into a whole new situation.

The tempest died down and I began my journey.

While trying to make sense of this place,

I found my own paradise.

This paradise made of soft, colored leather,

Of grass fields, jerseys, cheering people

And the swish of the soccer net

When a goal was made.

It was my refuge, my lifeline

While I tried to figure out the person I was

And who I wanted to be; the beginning of my appreciation

 For this new page in my story.

Now I look back down the old road

And I realize how far I’ve come,

How much everything about me has changed,

How much I want to be my own master.

Choosing for myself, no one for me.

I love how life goes-

Never stops, but always changing;

It keeps me moving forward.

I don’t want to stop; I will do what I want;

To dream of soaring once again,

To continue growing and working hard.

I’ll be who I want; there is no doubt of that.
