Me

Location

I’m speaking my mind to let them know

that I’m not alone; I’ve got a home.

I spread no evil; I cause no pain.

I’m just waiting in the dark, trying to stop the rain

to let the light shine and let them see

that I’m only human, I’m only me.

I’m neither a terrorist nor a criminal,

so why is it so typical

for them to raise their eyes and only see

a monster that really isn’t me.

I try so hard to let it go,

but it’s impossible not to let the pain show.

One day I will show them the reality

that my hijab represents only humility,

that we Muslims believe in love and kindness,

not in hatred and creating darkness.

And there will come a day when they’ll finally see

that I’m only human, I’m only me.
