Me

Me

From across the Atlantic Ocean

Where my ancestor’s first step was born

Where my father wore his ton up shoes to school

And where my mother never thought she would leave home

The palm trees stretching up high in the sky

The ripe beautiful cherries hanging from each tree

The sound of happiness that sways in the air

The man outside that yells to buy bread in the morning to survive

Kids wanting success more than the air they breathe

I want to be a doctor my father says

Big dreams that were all too good to be true

No opportunity or chance at life

A place where happiness is valued more than money

A place where your soul rests without disturbance

A place where children would stay hours by their teacher’s house to learn more

A place where you can feel the beating sun at work but food on the table is the ultimate goal

Wishing for a better life but leaving families behind is the worst

High up in the sky, New York lights flashing like bolts of lightning

The happiness on my parents’ faces but the sorrow in their eyes

Crazy how the Atlantic Ocean separates two different worlds

The sound of traffic for the very first time

A welcoming town with diverse backgrounds

Boston they call it, is where I was born

We weren’t successful back home but now you can be my parents tell me

But what exactly is success?

The uniqueness of being an American

The wide open doors of opportunities

Sleepless nights studying means a step closer to my dream

My dream to fulfill what my parents always wanted to be

A dream that my ancestors wished they could see

To make that country across the Atlantic Ocean proud

Two countries, one body of water

Two different worlds that merge into one person

Me
