The Memories That Captivate My Mind

Location

The first rehearsal,

Everyone staring at me with careful eyes:

Full of hope, full of faith, full of understanding,

But most importantly, filled with love.

That is what I remember the most.

Running lines, singing with the new cast,

Filled with a previously unknown level of joy.

Watching my castmates laugh and joke,

Then recite their lines with a beautiful melody of tone.

That is what I remember the most.

Rehearsing with my new sisters,

Getting to know their characters onstage,

Then getting to know them backstage:

Growing to love them.

That is what I will remember the most.

Rehearsing my very first onstage kiss,

Anxiety at a maximum level,

And then feeling the gentle pressure of his lips against mine:

And the knowledge that it will be successful every time.

That is what I will remember the most.

Bringing the show onto the stage,

In awe of the new space, the new anxieties that follow,

The excitement of opening night,

While knowing I will leave everything after closing night.

That is what I will remember the most.

Opening night jitters,

The wishes and dreams have finally approached,

Standing backstage, ready to take my place,

Then feeling the spotlight hit.

That is what I will remember the most.

Singing about my dreams,

Making everyone onstage understand who I am, what I want,

And succeeding for everyone but you,

Feeling heartbroken when you cannot understand, and saying goodbye.

That is what I will remember the most.

Singing the most climatic song,

Understanding each word, each note, each melody,

The euphoria of performing that perfection every night,

To astonished cheers and standing ovations.

That is what I will remember the most.

Bringing the sister bond to life,

Loving my sister backstage and onstage,

The heartbreak of seeing her die onstage,

Having to leave her older sister behind.

That is what I will remember the most.

The heartbreaking cries every night,

A broken mother singing to her broken daughter,

“So believe that she mattered, and believe that she always will.”

Feeling unable to carry on.

That is what I remember the most.

Confusion, the loss so unbarable,

Hysterical, unable to find a path to travel.

“All I have are memories”

And then discovering memories are all you need.

That is what I will remember the most.

Falling in love,

A first duet between loves,

Sealing the future with a kiss and a promise,

And leaving the future open to possibilities.

That is what I will remember the most.

Closing night, on the verge of tears,

Feeling my castmates’ support in the form of many hugs and tears,

Feeling your gentle kiss on the side of my head,

Knowing I had your full support, onstage and off.

That is what I will remember the most.

Playing my dream role: Jo March.

My senior year musical: Little Women.

The amazing cast and crew who made it all possible,

And the love I felt from the community.

That is what I will remember the most.

And I cannot be more grateful.
