To my best friend, L.

When I look at you I don’t just see some sad, lost girl,

I see someone beautiful, who makes my world melt when she smiles,

I see someone whose laugh just makes me want to laugh right along with you.

When you’re with me, the clouds move away and I just see YOU.

I know you’re not always happy.

The pain in your eyes becomes pain in my heart,

The shake in your voice becomes shake in my knees,

And when I hear you say “I need you”… I’m there.

I love you. You don’t have to put a mask on for me.

I don’t need you to be happy, I just need you.

You make yourself live in a land of pretend.

You walk through the day with a smile on your face,

But you can’t escape the sadness in your chest.

Every day just brought you down lower,

And all I could do was try to bring you back up.

I wish you would believe me when I say you’re beautiful,

I wish you would believe me when I say I want to be with you.

I wish you understood that your depression doesn’t bring me down,

I wish you never left.

When you told me it was over, I knew it was to protect me,

But the only protection I needed was your arms wrapped around me.

My happiest moments are the ones we shared together.

I was there for you, and you there for me. Always.

I shouldn’t have let you go.

I told you I would be here; I told you I could help,

But you let me go and gave into the darkness inside of you.

You wouldn’t see me when I visited and my calls went right to voicemail.

I should have known the pain you were in.

I could have stopped you from letting go.

Now I’m just as stuck as you were,

Stuck in a world without you with me.

It’s not that I didn’t think you would actually take your own life,

It’s that I just didn’t think.
