My Dream America
To live in a society
Of
Love, Altruism, Harmony;
Where all my brothers and sisters not just by blood but by humanity,
Are treated with equality.
And a step from that is our nation understanding the importance of equity.
We can all be given the same tools to succeed
But if I can’t talk, she can’t read, and he can’t see
How can one of the same thing help all three of us proceed?
My Dream America
Is one where my brothers no longer fear when they see those blue lights
Where being harassed by those who wear a badge
Become something of the past.
To stop their heart beating fast
When forced down to their knees
Praying and praying hard that this day is not their last.
My Dream America
Where my sisters that wear a hijab
Are not shamed or defamed by those
Who seek ignorance as a gain.
One’s faith and morals are bigger than the eye can see
Why must one feel compelled to reject their modesty?
My Latina Sister
Was told by a man
“Go back to your country, you’re not wanted here”
He said this after she entered his store.
He accepted her cash, then harassed her
As she left through the door.
He wanted her purchase then decided
No more
The boldness to do that
Astonishes
My soul.
And let us not forget
About our Native Americans
That reside
Money for corporations is more important than
Water for their lives?
Culture, tradition
Passed from generations at a time
Are sadly ignored by those who want to make a dime.
It may not feel like much
But place the shoe on the other foot
And let’s see then
How much
Their hearts will be touched.
Each culture makes a piece of America
Without it we can’t be whole
Land of opportunity, the “free world” we claim to be
But the America I live in brings heartache to me.
America the “beautiful”
There’s so much more to say.
I pray to God
The America I dream about
Will be America one day.
