To My Sister (What I Don't Say)

Dear Little Sister,

When you kick the covers off your bed

Onto mine,

When you whisper my name

Shrilly to wake me up in the morning,

When you stay stubbornly by my side,

Demanding I revert to childhood and play with you,

When you hug me

And won’t let me get away,

I know this is your language for “I love you.”

And therefore,

Even though my natural instinct is to brush you off,

Send you away,

Bark, “I’m busy right now!”,

I don’t.

Because this is your love,

And love is hard enough to find anyhow,

So who am I to throw it away?

Chloe
