Nine Years into Tomorrow

Peering into the strange future, Still too many things women haven't accomplished. With my dreams Another goal will be added to the Wall of Accomplishments. Senior year at the university. Full of hope, full of thought. Just make the butterflies stop! Will I make it? Or will I fall? Last game of the year. The key that will open the lock to the future. Right key, become professional. Wrong one, rethink my future. The apprehensiveness eats me alive, But being back on the field, Back with my brothers, It brings me to life. This is my sanctuary. I feel the sudden rush of the game. The opposing team passing the gem, Or staying safe by handing it to another guardian in order to advance. But to me, it doesn't matter. Take a risk or play it safe, I'll stop them or take the gem away. Nearing the end of this matchup, Joy fills my body, And I can't help but to smile and jump ecstatically. This game belongs to us. Satisfied, I ponder endlessly. Did I play well enough? I'll just have to wait and see. Fast forward a few months later. The butterflies decide to return. Will they pick me? Will they pick me? Seconds turn into hours, Minutes last a lifetime. Finally, I hear my name being called. Inevitably, tears race down my cheeks. I did it! I did it! All I had to do was believe, To become the first female football player.
