No Voice

"Shut up."

"Sit down."

"Do as you are told."

They speak the words with their eyes as their mouths say

"I understand your concern, but there is nothing we can do."

We thought school was for students

We thought teachers were there to help

We saw a wrong and tried to right it

We thought "yes, we're students, but we have a say in this too"

We put hours of hard work and 53 sleepless nights

We were mistaken.

Literature

Speaking up is a theme in so many books and stories and poems

History

Civil rights and revolutions and people standing up for what they believe in throughout time

Science

Galileo disagreed with the church and they locked him up for it

But the earth revolves around the sun and not the other way

All our lives we are taught to speak up for ourselves,

but when we do,

we find

we have

no

voice.
