Nos Vamos Pa America

When I landed in America I couldn’t believe my eyes

The place full of dreams and endless opportunities was now in the palm of my hands

My parents worked hard for me to be the woman I am today.

Long nights without my parents, watching over my siblings.

Having the warm bucket of water ready so my daddy could soak his frostbitten feet.

I couldn’t help but think why did we come here?

Force to pledge allegiance to a country that had now shattered my dreams, hope

and ability to love my skin.

Because before I came here, my skin was not something to be ashamed of.

Learning US history made want to take back the times I said “nos vamos pa America”

Constantly defending my parents from “you’re in America learn English” attacks began to weigh on me.

How could they be so cruel we love this country like they do?

So you see when I say the dreams and opportunities I once saw as a little girl are starting to fade away

Its pain and hurt from not being good enough, from not being pretty enough

From not being light enough.

But as I work my way to success that little girl that landed here still holds on to the dreams and endless opportunities that could be.

I don’t want to give up on America, I won’t give up on America because this is now my home.

And I know that the problems we face can get better,

See I believe people already gave up on trying to make it better because “there’s no hope”

But there is

Little girls like me…. see we grow up and want change and we seek it.

And we won’t stop, I won’t stop till I know

“nos vamos pa America”

CAN be a great thing again.
