Not Everything is Bad

The walls of hospitals have heard more prayers than churches.
Murders, now-a-day, are framed as “rescue and searches.”
Corruption has led to civilian insurgents.
But not everything is bad.

It may be that airports have seen more sincere kisses than wedding halls.
We care more about who we impress, yet ignore who we appall.
Illnesses have caged millions, trapped between walls.
But not everything is bad.

Pollution haunts the air that we breathe.
Racism and sexism cause rage to seethe.
Society is propaganda we wear as a wreath.
But not everything is bad.

Each day, without fail, the sun shines and rises.
Optimism brings happiness and surprises.
Opportunity knocks on your door and advises.
But not everything is good.

People give help to those in need.
There are expectations to meet and exceed.
Millions of books are available to read.
But not everything is good.

Children grow up with high hopes for their lives.
A patient with cancer learns she’ll survive.
Gay Marriage is legal and equality begins to thrive.
But not everything is good.

The truth is life is full of goods and bads,
happy’s and sad’s.
There’s only one way to make life better—
to look at it with promise, all together.

Everything around is a blessing, not a curse.
And although it’s inevitable we’ll end up in a hearse,
our job is to leave the world better,
not worse.
