O Beautiful but Damned

O beautiful but damned

Bright eyed,  my hand pressed to my heart

I pledged allegiance to the flag

Every day.

I listened to Ray Charles croon "America!"

Oh America

The beautiful, "God done shed His grace on thee".

I studied my American History

and I forgave my country

for her past

and I received As and gold stars.

It has been in my blood to love

"Love thy country more than self"

And I did.

I did.

And then I grew up

And I saw hate.
