The Ode

Location

Because we are the broken and shattered
crooked smiles on crooked streets
treadmill runners yearning for a place to be
Because we desire to be found as "somebody"

Because we allow stereotypes to type us
written history written by us
subtitling our problems minority
Because we abandon individual integrity

Because we are the collective casualty
treading the trail trodden cyclically
we forget our color is not our name
Because our souls have been too long called the same

Because we must lift the burden of anxiety
meet the road projecting tragedy
(a road beyond shackles and poverty)
I write this ode to you
a commentary on our weary restlessness
a dare to be more than just here or undone
to be more than just hoods and guns
to be everything we promised ourselves to be
Because we deem ourselves as somebody
