An Ode to Adversity

For years piled upon years people define
Looking beautiful as the measure of a person
Ambitions and dreams? Forget it!
What a person is, is mediated by their outside
Lest we all forget to not judge a book by its cover
Even through struggling through insecurities
Scores of young girls see their lack of clear skin as an indicator of imperfection
Sympathy is lost, regardless of their shared trials.

Beyond popular belief
Everyone one despite outward appearance
And pretention, go through a battle for beauty
Usually, one would build up a sister in need
To help them get through that shared experience.
I’ve been there! I’ve felt that!
Fortunately, that setback has given me experience that I can
Utilize to strengthen my fellow girls. And to help them
Love themselves, rather than face unreal standards.

Love the trial, it made you stronger
Open up your heart to others who feel the same
Vow to never let insecurity rule your life
Embrace yourself, you’ve overcome
Delight in your inner bravery and beauty

despite what people may say, you are flawless.
