Ode to My Mother

You, mother, are the object of my appreciation.
You have brought me into this strange world,
Leaving me to explore with bright eyes and no sense of direction
The fresh air being inhaled into my tiny lungs for the first time
The sound of my first cry, bringing you to tears and me to confusion
You gave me the greatest gift, life
For years I would not understand this concept.

You raised me to love and show compassion to all that I come in contact with,
To be stern and confident with my decisions
Not only did you raise me to love, but you raised me to know right from wrong
To stand strong and be my own person
Now as a senior, I feel upset at the thought of leaving you…
To start my own life, a fresh new beginning
Just as when I was born
This is a breath of fresh, new air

I know from your show of compassion
You will be there for me and help guide me in the right direction
Time after time
When I fall
You pick me up
When I lose direction
You remind me what’s right
If there’s anything you have taught me it is to keep calm
Carry on, and stay strong
To count my losses and to forgive, but never forget.
