Pearls Before Swine

The current keeps pushing, pushing me

Trying to make me move.

But no matter how hard the push is,

Budge is not something I’ll do.

I close up when anyone passes,

I try not to talk too loud,

I refuse to leave my little rock,

And I stay away from crowds.

No matter how hard I try to stop

Life’s sands from getting in,

It always ends with my opening up,

That’s when the process begins.

When the sand of life’s experience

Wheedles its way inside

It ends up getting stuck within me

And there’s nowhere I can hide.

Experience is just a splinter

That irritates my being.

It may be very annoying but,

I have to live with the thing.

To protect myself from being hurt

I cover it with my dreams.

It takes a while to make it safe

And is harder than it seems.

I continue to cover up the

Sand with those dreams of mine

Until a new thing starts to take shape

And it begins to shine.

When you all see the brilliance of it

That’s when you’ll value me.

One day I’ll use all my dreams for this

And that’s when you will see:

We all have a chance to make such things,

Even someone like me.
