Performance Art

5, 6, 7, 8.
Numbers, steps, lines, formations.
Again.
5, 6, 7, 8.
Keep counting,
Don't forget to smile,
Watch where you're going.

Art has many definitions,
But what is defined as art?
Paintings, drawings, sketches,
Sure, those are art.

But what about theatre,
What about performing,
What about dance?

Being on stage,
Belting your favorite song,
Gliding across the floor?

No one asks about that.
No one asks about the fine arts.
No one even considers us
Art.

But we are.
Can you leap across the stage,
In heels?
Can you sing in front of
A crowd of thousands,
If not more?

We push our bodies
To their limits.
Just for an audience
To leave thinking
"Wow, that was beautiful",
And then continue on
With their day.

We work so hard
Just for that small moment,
Only to be forgotten about
Hours later.

How many people
Do you know,
Who can say that
They are performance art?

Because I can.

This poem is about:
Me
My community
