Poem for Brown Girl Dreaming

When  I sit under this magnolia tree

the world around me vanishes

I am free

The God I serve is with me

Embracing me

Telling me followed his will

that even when people closed their doors

I opened their hearts to see more

that even though I am not as gifted

The words you gave me kept me lifted

That one friend was all I needed

To see the beauty in all things

When I sit under this magnolia tree

I let the silence speak

fermenting around me

Even silence tells a story

A story I've longed to hear

So as I sit under this magnolia tree

I free spirit

To be here eternally
